• Sand Harbor
  Does your dog love to join you for adventures on the water? The beach at Sand Harbor is one of the most beautiful in all of Lake Tahoe, with crystal-clear water, fascinating rock formations, clean, sandy beaches, and a variety of different outdoor activities available. Bring your dog along for a boat ride with two boat launches located nearby or for a paddling trip with your canoe or kayak. There are even shaded picnic tables, complete with barbecue pits. Just keep in mind that dogs are welcome on this beach between October 15 and April 15 but not during the peak of the spring/summer seasons.

• Hidden Beach
  Looking for a beach where your dog can play off-leash? Hidden Beach lives up to its name by being a bit more difficult to get to than other beaches on our list, but it's an excellent option when you and your pup are craving a good hike. You can access the beach via the paved Tahoe East Shore Trail, and it's about a 10-minute walk to the beach from the parking area. This beach is located within Lake Tahoe, Nevada State Park, so there are tons more outdoor activities to enjoy in the area in addition to spending time on the beach.

• Patton Landing Beach
  The most popular place around Lake Tahoe for stand-up paddleboarding, Patton Landing Beach is a bit different from the other beaches on our list. The surface is very pebbly rather than sandy, but it's still quite comfortable for pets to walk on. Dogs are welcome on the eastern portion of the beach, as long as they're kept on a leash. There's also a small cafe by this beach overlooking the lake, with a pet-friendly outdoor deck where you can enjoy a meal after your adventures.

• Kings Beach Picnic Area
  Craving an outdoor meal with your favorite pup at your side? Kings Beach Picnic Area is a small, secluded beach in the larger Kings Beach State Recreation Area, and it's an ideal spot for an autumn picnic. The next most obvious Tahoe activity is just sitting quietly gazing at all the gorgeousness of the High Sierra. With almost no light pollution during the night, stargazing in the Sierra should be high on anyone's list. Tahoe's spectacular night sky is best seen while sitting either close to the lake and away from trees that block the sky, or watching from way up high above the trees. Oral history of the Washoe people tells about encounters with the 1846/1847 Donner party, and recent archaeologic evidence backs up their stories. More than once Washoe scouts tried to help the stranded pioneers with offerings of food, which the Donner party rebuffed, on occasion with violence. When a scout observed dead bodies being cannibalized, the Washoe people gave up and retreated. From then on they referred to the Donner party as "not people."

After the Donner camp was deserted, the Washoe people, aiming to rid the area of bad spirits, returned to the site to burn or bury anything left behind.

Two years earlier, the Washoe had also proven their kindness by sharing food — edible pine nuts — and finding a safe passage to California for John Fremont, who was leading an 1844 government survey expedition. After struggling through the deep snow, an impressed Fremont wrote about the Washoe skill with their snowshoes.

Washoe hunters made snowshoes by bending a manzanita branch into a circle, then lacing strips of deer hide across the circle. The hunters also equipped themselves with long poles to use while snowshoeing.

As with any native people, the Washoe were experts in gathering and using natural materials for their daily needs. And being hunter/gatherers instead of famers, these people needed lightweight baskets to carry their belongings during the seasonal valley-to-mountain-to-valley moves.

Then, between 1890 and 1935, the Arts and Crafts movement created a new appreciation for nature and all things natural. With the railroad making a trip into nature easier for city dwellers, Lake Tahoe tourism swelled. The every-day baskets made by Washoe weavers became easy to obtain, and therefore, collectable. Because the popularity of baskets provided weavers with an income, basket makers concentrated on weaving more difficult and intricate designs.

The Gatekeeper's Museum in Tahoe City has an extensive collection of Native American baskets. The well thought out exhibit displays over 250 Native American baskets from all over the western States, as well as British Columbia, and, of course, includes Washoe baskets. A well preserved 900 year old woven hat, found inside a Nevada cave, sits alone in a separate glass case so that visitors can appreciate its fine workmanship. The museum display also gives a lesson on the materials used to make the baskets, as well as how the raw materials were gathered and prepared prior to weaving. This small museum is well worth a visit — or even two.

Although the names of Washoe weavers like Dat So La Lee, and Lena Frank Dick, and Sarah Jim Mayo are not well remembered, their talent remains for us to appreciate. And, with any luck, for some of their descendants to emulate.

If a shopping trip calls, then Truckee's main street will fill the bill. Stores stocked with appealing merchandise abound, and a just right souvenir to take home is certain to be discovered.

With over 50 local restaurants, visitors won't go hungry. It's a sure bet there will be a dish to satisfy every palate, and every wallet.

From skiing and ice skating in the winter to biking or hiking the well maintained Truckee River trail in the summer, everybody from the youngest to the very senior citizen will find an activity to suit any time of the year.

Of course, no one can visit Truckee without stopping by the Donner Memorial. It doesn't take a big imagination to be sympathetic to the Donner parties' awful predicament.

The Railroad Museum is right in the middle of downtown. There, you learn about the building of the railroad. You can see and appreciate the struggle and work it took to lay tracks around and through the imposing mountains that loom just outside the entrance door. Outside of town, there are even abandoned railroad tunnels to explore.

Near the tunnels are petroglyphs. Symbols carved into our native stone, proving that these mountains have been known to many groups of people for thousands of years.

As with everywhere, the town of Truckee has had its share of tragedy. Although it was mostly Chinese workers who laboriously laid the tracks for the Western portion of the Transcontinental Railroad, the Chinese were not welcome as permanent residents in the area.

In 1876, three hundred residents of Truckee formed a chapter of the Order of the Caucasians.  Seven members of that Order set fire to two cabins full of Chinese woodcutters, shooting at the woodcutters as they ran out of the flaming cabins. One Chinese man was killed. Then in 1886, fourteen-hundred Chinese inhabitants of Truckee were expelled. As part of the campaign to rid the them from Truckee, any local business that did business with the Chinese was boycotted.

Truckee has been through a few name changes. First called Gray's Station, then Coburn's Station, the railroad's founders finally dubbed the community Truckee. They named it after a helpful, amiable Piaute man who often greeted early travelers with the phrase "tro-kay" which, in Paiute, means "everything is all right."  It was originally thought that he was announcing his name.

Choosing that particular title for the community may have been more prophetic than expected. Today, despite the crowds, despite the traffic, in Truckee, with hard its times behind, everything is all right.

Have you ever thought about America's transcontinental railroad, and the people responsible for that slight miracle? Instead of a dangerous ocean passage, or one heck of a long walk, it became possible to travel, almost quickly and comfortably, across America, from its Atlantic coast to its far Pacific.

So, how about taking a relatively easy hike through some of that history? With our connection to the transcontinental railroad right in our own back yard, it's possible to walk in the steps of the extraordinary people who planned, engineered, and built one of the most difficult routes of the railroad.

Begin the hike just outside of Truckee, along Donner Pass Road, at the Donner Summit Bridge. There you will find parking, and a plaque commemorating the China Wall that was built by the Chinese railroad workers. The Wall is still there, and still looks capable of doing its job. Beyond the plaque is the trail toward the abandoned railroad tunnels.

No tracks run through the tunnels now; the bare ground is uneven and the tunnels are dark, so don't forget to bring a light with you. The system is a series of disconnected tunnels. Some do have a few openings that allow light to filter in, and occasionally you can see the light at the end of a tunnel, but mostly, it's a dim walk through them.

It's best to hike these tunnels in the summer or fall when you are less likely to encounter snow or ice or mud.

Theodore Judah, was the young engineer who planned the railroad's route in the Sierras. Using a barometer to determine altitude, Judah surveyed more than one route, finding that the best one for the railroad was through Truckee. As you are walking, take a minute to appreciate the hundreds of unnamed and unsung laborers who built the Chinese Wall, and dug the tunnels with little more than hand drilling, black powder and nitroglycerin. That unstable combination led to an extraordinary number of worker deaths in the over 15 months it took to finish the job.

The tunnels around Truckee and Donner were closed In 1993 when the railroad was rerouted to a new tunnel running through Mount Judah, the peak named after that pioneering engineer, Theodore.

A full round trip of the Truckee/Donner tunnels is about 5 miles, and could easily be divided into two trips on different days. That would give you more time to study the modern graffiti on the old tunnel walls. Depending on your opinion of that art form, your history hike could double as a street-art walk.

Can you imagine bicycling from Incline Village to Spooner Lake comfortably, without worrying about heavy summer traffic as you navigate curve filled Highway 28? No? Now imagine a beautiful summer's day with you on your bike and a safe, sensational 22 mile round trip ride in front of you. That day will come, but be patient. The Spooner Lake extension of the popular Eastside Trail won't be completed until 2026, but when it is — wow!

The new section will be 8 miles long, extending the length of the trail to 11 beautiful miles.

The plan is to build the new section on the Lake side of Highway 28, following the highway's route instead of the shoreline.

If the popularity of the existing 3 miles of the Eastside Trail gives us any hints, we can be sure that the completed trail will be well used. That leads to the question of parking. Currently there are 91 parking spaces at the Incline Village trailhead. However, The Tahoe Transportation District has applied for a grant to complete another 90 parking spaces along Highway 28 in Incline Village. If the grant is approved, construction will begin in 2021.

At the other end of the trail, plans for a 250 vehicle parking lot across from the Spooner Lake State Park entrance. Skunk Harbor will gain about 40 new parking spaces, with Secret Harbor and Chimney Beach getting 105 and 140 new parking spaces respectively. In total, over 535

new parking spaces are included in the planned extension. Also, planned are transit stops at each location. The Tahoe Fund points out that the expanded parking and transit stops are "to meet exiting visitor recreation access and not to encourage greater access to the beaches and coves."

There is a goal larger than the trail from Incline Village to Spooner Lake. Eventually, the Tahoe Trail will circumnavigate Lake Tahoe. Right now, there are 35 completed miles just waiting for the hum of your bicycle wheels.

With so much to be done, construction continues. On the south end of the Lake, Tahoe Transportation District is completing a ½ mile connection from the casinos to the Rabe Meadow trail. There is also work on a 3 mile extension from the U.S. Forest Service's Round Hill Pines Historic Resort to the Zephyr Cove Resort & Beach.

Additionally, the Tahoe Transportation District is seeking grant funding to complete the 3 mile segment from Crystal Bay to Incline Village.

Maybe the best part of all is that you can get involved. The Tahoe Fund is giving the opportunity to leave a legacy by having your name engraved on a donor wall for as little as a $100.00 donation. Or, for a larger donation, you can have your name engraved on a bear shaped paver, or a trout-shaped plaque.

In 2011, a group of deep divers found the body of a man who'd been missing since 1994. The remains, in a wetsuit and still buckled into weights and a tank, was lying on a shelf over 200 feet below the surface. The missing diver had been with a friend but equipment problems caused him to begin sinking. An immediate and thorough search found no sign of him, leaving his well preserved remains hidden for 17 years.

Many are convinced that lava tubes connect Lake Tahoe with other area lakes. Some maintain that a tube exists between Lake Tahoe and Donner Lake, others swear that Tahoe is connected to Fallen Leaf Lake. No matter which lakes are attached what lakes, the believers are sure the presumed lava tubes hold many secrets — not to mention bodies.

Stories are plentiful about Tahoe Tessie, the legendary sometimes seen monster (think Loch Ness) who's been seen swimming around our Lake. The UC Davis Tahoe Research Group attributes the stories and sightings to pareidolia (look it up) and/or the mistaken identification of a large breed fish. There are a few people who believe that when Tessie is resting between appearances, she hides out in an underwater cave at the base of supposedly haunted Cave Rock on the Lake's east shore.

The most intriguing investigation of Lake Tahoe's depths was in 2016. A group of amateurs dropped a Go Pro camera at one of the deepest points of the Lake. It took 4 minutes for the camera to reach the muddy bottom. The results were a bit disappointing, so the operators reeled their camera back in, attached a glow stick and a can of sardines to the Go Pro, and dropped the whole package overboard. After another 4 minutes they saw a smallish fish, and then the camera caught a larger very shark-like fish. Upon viewing the video, experts at UC Davis said the large swimmer was a big trout. Seriously.

For instance, in 1865, a San Francisco based engineer, with the elegant name of Alexis Waldemar Von Schmidt, created the Lake Tahoe and San Francisco Water Works Company. Mr. Von Schmidt also acquired a half section of land near the Truckee River outfall, along with the rights to five hundred cubic feet per second of Lake Tahoe's water. Yes, you read that right.

Von Schmidt planed to supply the city of San Francisco with water from Lake Tahoe. Beginning at the Truckee River outfall, a series of aqueducts would channel water through the Sierras until reaching the north fork of the American River, and then from there, on to San Francisco. However, in 1870 the California Legislature, spurning Von Schmidt's application, granted Mark Hopkins and Leland Stanford's Donner Lumber and Boom Company, the right to build a dam at the Lake's Truckee River outlet — which they did. However, Mr. Von Schmidt and his grandiose plan have not been completely forgotten. A roadside plaque mentioning him stands near Alpine Meadows Road on Highway 89.

The first small lumber and rock dam developed into the dam you can tour in Tahoe City. And a very informative self-guided tour it is. You learn that the existing dam was completed in 1913 and modernized in 1987; that the dam controls only the top six feet of Tahoe's water; that while 63 streams flow into Lake Tahoe, the north-easterly flowing Truckee River is the only outflow of Tahoe's water. Most importantly, you learn why Fanny Bridge is so named.

In 1915, the dam, along with 14 acres surrounding the outlet, was purchased from the Truckee River General Electric Company by the U.S. government for $139,500.00. The dam is now owned, operated, and maintained by the US Bureau of Reclamation.

Furthermore, Lake Tahoe's sole dam is not just a local landmark. In 1981 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A visit offers more than just dam information. There are picnic tables under the pines. Tahoe City's swimming beach is a short walk north of the dam, and a small museum with beautiful examples of Native American basketry, sits just south of the dam.

A dam visit may prod your curiosity. Now that you've seen the Lake's ending, you may want to discover part of its beginnings. The Upper Truckee River empties into the Lake in South Lake Tahoe. It's not hard to find, and has an easy 1.5 mile, mostly flat, but sometimes muddy trail waiting to be explored. The Upper Truckee River loop, was described by one visitor as 'a lovely ramble along a babbling brook.'   

Who can resist that kind of description? Enjoy your walk, but don't forget the bug spray.

In 1903, as its first project, the newly formed United States Reclamation Service (today's U.S. Bureau of Reclamation) began construction of a diversion dam on the Truckee River.  Completed in 1905, the Derby dam, sent 48% of Truckee River water 32 miles south to Lahonton Reservoir via the Truckee Canal.

The consequences of the water's diversion to Lahonton adversely affected two species of fish, the Northern Paiute people, Pyramid Lake, and eventually, turned neighboring Winnemucca Lake into a dry lake bed. Early on, the Paiute began to notice the damage, but no one listened to their warnings, or their pleas.

In the early 1900s, few gave much thought to an area's ecological health, or the plight of the land's original people. Although, one sympathetic trader's poignant observation still resonates: "There was never a hungry person on the reservation, they loved that kind of work—that way of making a living, and they had a dignity, which went away after the last (fish) run of 1937."

Pyramid Lake, known as Cui-Ui-Pah before Fremont's discovery, had been home to native peoples for so long that their beginnings were told in the legend of the Stone Mother. The people of the lake called themselves cui-ui ticutta (cui-ui eaters). The plentiful fish, known as cui-ui, are endemic to Pyramid Lake, and were vital to the physical, and spiritual well-being of the Northern Piaute.

By 1967, the surface of Pyramid Lake was 87 feet lower than it was before the construction of the Derby diversion dam. For many years, low water prevented spawning up the Truckee river. That, combined with pollution, doomed the Lahonton trout. But a fish that did not begin to breed until it was 8 years old, and could live as long as 40 years, had a better chance of surviving. It was their longevity that helped the cui-ui to endure for as long as 19 years without successfully reproducing.

Passage of the Endangered Species Act gave the Piaute tribe legal grounds to convince the federal government to limit the amount of water diverted from the Truckee River. The determined Piautes took their case all the way to the Supreme Court, reaching a settlement with the government in 1990. Though, it wasn't until 2015 that the Truckee River Operating Agreement went into effect, insuring the continuation of the cui-ui and Pyramid Lake.

The cui-ui is not a widely popular game fish, and its life is limited to a lonely part of the world. But the cui-ui is, and always has been, prized by a persistent group of people who fought for 110 years to save their fish and its home from devastation by mismanagement.

There is a great lesson in this story.

Fallen Leaf Lake

Fallen Leaf Lake was formed by glacial activity. Experts say that 2 glaciers moved down Glen Alpine Valley, finally stopping 1 mile short of Lake Tahoe. If a terminal moraine had not formed halting the glaciers' forward momentum, Lake Tahoe would have 2 bays — Emerald and Fallen Leaf.  We can still see nature's stop sign. The terminal moraine is visible at the northeastern edge of the north end of Fallen Leaf Lake.

The 2 mile long Fallen Leaf Lake offers boat rentals, trails for strolls, or more strenuous hikes, a waterfall, a campground, and the opportunity to take a dip in its deep, welcoming water.  After hikes or swims or boating, the Fallen Leaf Store by the marina offers food, along with good views to replenish body and soul.

Angora Lakes

About 1,200 feet above Lake Tahoe, Angora Lakes consist of 2 natural alpine lakes. The lakes were named for the Angora goats that often grazed in the area.

Nathan Gilmore, developer of 1880s Glen Alpine Springs Resort, and Secretary of the Pacific Coast chapter of the Angora Goat Breeders Association, often brought his herd to the lakes for grazing. For Mr. Gilmore and his goats, plenty of food meant plenty of mohair.

The more modern Angora Lakes Resort, built in the 1920s, is at the upper lake. There is a snack bar serving sandwiches, as well as world famous lemonade, and ice cream — along with great views. Rowboat, kayaks and paddle boards are available to rent.

For visitor's entertainment, a cliff face at the upper lake serves as a jumping platform for the brave. The highest ledge is about 60 feet above the water, and during the summer season many jumpers try it out.

The road to the Angora Lakes lower fee based parking lot is open from May 1 to October 1. The lot usually fills up early, and parking along Angora Ridge road is restricted. From the parking lot, it's about a mile hike to the lakes.

Spooner Lake

Part of the Nevada State Park system, this little lake is conveniently located at the junction of highways 50 and 28. Parking is fee based.  A new visitor center, along with a new amphitheater, provides information as well as programs. The park gives access to over 60 miles of trails for non-motorized use.

The 2-mile trail around Spooner Lake is mostly flat, and easy enough for almost all. The popular 5 mile trail to Marlette Lake can be accessed at the north end of Spooner Lake.

Marlette Lake is not a natural alpine lake, but was created as part of a water system to supply, literally, millions of gallons of Sierra water to Virginia City and the Comstock Lode — but that's another story for another blog.

Dr. Suzanne Simard unearthed knowledge of the underground fungal network that allows trees to interact and communicate. She also discovered hub trees. She calls them the Mother Trees of a forest. These biggest, tallest trees are highly connected with other trees, and have an important role in the flow of information and resources in a forest. They even recognize their kin; seedlings that are related to them. Dr. Simard's fascinating new book Finding The Mother Tree details her methods and her discoveries. The book is supported by the website The Mother Tree Project.

In 2016, a book written by a German forester, Peter Wohlleben, was published in English after the original German version generated a good amount of controversy.  In his book, The hidden Life of Trees: What they Feel, How they Communicate—Discoveries from a Secret World, Mr. Wohlleben advocates for higher ecological standards in forest management. It is the author's opinion that undisturbed forests should be preserved so that existing trees can grow old with dignity as they pass on knowledge to the next generation.

It is interesting to note that while Mr. Wohlleben's and Dr. Simard's work convinced each of them independently that trees are far more than simple chunks of wood, they both began their careers in the lumber industry.

Not all of us who love forests are able to become best selling authors or dedicated researchers, but we can support their findings by becoming amateur foresters.

By using a readily available website, we all can learn to identify our local trees; to tell the difference between a Jeffry pine, a Ponderosa pine, or a Sugar pine. We all hike with our phones now, so it's easy to pull up TRPA's tree ID tip sheet to learn about that sensational tree right in front of you as you hike through Tahoe's woods. Or discover, when resting against a tree with bark smelling like vanilla, it's a Jeffrey pine that's got your back.

Just in case your hike takes you to a place where you are looking at the biggest tree you've ever seen in your life, you might be able to make it famous by including it in a registry of large trees (if it hasn't been included already). The USDA, Lake Tahoe Basin website gives specific instructions, as well as links to California and Nevada big tree registry. Good luck with your hunt!

Maybe, though, the best thing about a forest is its simple serenity. Go find a cozy grove, let the slight but pungent piney odor tickle your nose, then, be quiet and let the trees do all the talking.

It seems that John Muir said it best:

"The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness."

The word ski comes from the old Norse word 'skiõ' which meant split piece of wood or firewood, and there have been almost as many different kinds of skis and techniques as there have been years of use.

Asymmetrical skis, first described over 500 years ago, were used in northern Finland and Sweden, even up until the 1930s. On one foot, skiers wore a long straight non-arching ski for sliding, while the other foot was outfitted with a shorter ski for kicking. The bottom of the short ski was, sometimes, covered with an animal skin to aid in the kicking, while the bottom of the longer ski was treated with slippery animal fat to help with gliding.

But, it was the traditional 10 foot long variety of ski that was used by our Sierra skiing legend, Snowshoe Thompson.  Mr. Thompson was born Jon Torsteinsson Rue in Austbygdi, Norway in 1827. He emigrated to the United States with his family when he was 10 years old, and they settled in the mid-west. Fourteen years later, after driving a herd of milk cows from Wisconsin to Placerville, John Albert Thompson settled in the Sierras. There, he tried his hand at mining, eventually saving enough money to buy a small farm.

Because no one had been able to regularly deliver the mail across the Sierra, in 1855 an ad for a federal mail carrier was published in the Sacramento Union newspaper.

Knowing he could do the job, John Albert (Snowshoe) Thompson went to work. He fashioned a pair 10 foot long skis from green oak, with a single piece of leather in the middle of each for bindings, and equipped himself with a long, sturdy pole for pushing, braking and balancing. 

Using webbed snowshoes, it had taken the last government mail carrier eight days to cross the mountains from Placerville to Genoa. In contrast, while carrying 50 pounds of mail on his back, and using a pair of skis weighing 25 pounds, Snowshoe Thompson skied the outbound trip in three days, and made the return trip in two days. He'd found his calling.

Snowshoe Thompson made that trip, in that time, for the next 20 years, but was never paid a cent for his work by the United States Government. Being no dummy, Mr. Thompson charged his customers, though many couldn't or wouldn't pay. He did the work without a federal contract, as a private "expressman". He tried more than once to get Congress to pay him back wages, but was never successful.

John-Albert-Snowshoe Thompson died of complications from appendicitis when he was 49 years old. He's buried in the cemetery in Genoa, Nevada. Stop by, and let him know that he's not been forgotten.

Three years later, the Governor Stanford was joined by the steamship Niagara, 83 feet of faster reliability.

Not long afterwards, the timber baron, D. L. Bliss, doubled Tahoe's fleet of steamships by adding the Meteor, capable of speeds up to 30 mph, and her sister ship the Emerald II. However, his best was yet to come.

Mr. Bliss ordered a ship to be designed and built by Union Iron Works in San Francisco. The hull was made in sections, then disassembled, packed for transport, and shipped by rail to Carson City. All 154 tons of boat pieces were then loaded onto wagons, and laboriously pulled by mule and horse teams up and over Spooner Summit to Glenbrook. There, the S.S. Tahoe was reassembled and launched "with much festivities" on June 14, 1896.

The S.S. Tahoe, dubbed Queen of The Lake, was 169 feet of elegance voyaging effortlessly through the Lake's waters. As  many as 200 passengers enjoyed fine food, and comfort in the well-appointed dining room and saloon.

The ship's narrow beam allowed for plenty of speed and power. Although in a blow, the boat rolled heavily causing more than a few bouts of seasickness. 

The S.S. Tahoe's twin engines were initially powered by wood, burning about 4-½ cords per day. The engines were eventually converted to oil burners, making the ship much quieter than the other steamers on the Lake. Although, each time the S.S. Tahoe docked, it announced its arrival with a piercingly loud whistle. Naturally, excited crowds gathered on the docks while news, mail, visitors and supplies were off-loaded.

The S.S.Tahoe was a necessary summer link between communities. Reliable to a fault, she was only late once in her 40 years of deliveries, and that was because of a clogged smokestack.

After the loss of its mail contract to another vessel, along with the 1935 completion of a car friendly road around the Lake, the S.S. Tahoe became uneconomical to operate.

The ship lay unused for a few years before D. L. Bliss's son, William, decided to scuttle the vessel in the shallow water off Glenbrook. As a memorial to its service, the clear Tahoe waters would allow the old boat to be glimpsed and admired by passenger carrying glass bottomed boats.

In August of 1940, the S.S. Tahoe was scuttled, but a miscalculation caused it to land on a steep underwater slope. The ship slid out of sight, ending up in about 400 feet of water, unseen but not entirely forgotten.

In 2002, a team from New Millennium Dive Expeditions set a record for their high-altitude dive on the site, resulting in the S.S.Tahoe becoming the first maritime site in Nevada to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
